sierracuse:

a few articles have showed up saying that putin no longer backs assad and that russian ships delivering helicopters are turning away from syria.

News just reported in Putins speech in Mexico that…

The West has a long track record of giving medicine that’s worse than the disease, and the rest of the world has a better memory than we do. Intervention almost always means escalation, and the more situations in which various western governments intervene, the worse the problem of moral hazard becomes. There are dozens of studies showing small extremist groups taking risks they wouldn’t otherwise take to attract the attention of the western media with the eventual goal of getting military intervention on their behalf. The west also tends to be very bad at discerning “the good” from “the bad”, mostly because in most conflicts those designations make no sense.

Here’s one example of US competence during the Balkan conflicts of the 90s (which also really threw Russia for a loop— but that, I have actually written long ass papers on, so I’ll spare y’all).

And now I will try not to grind this axe any further.
